Description: Schalkenbosch Estates is located 8km from village of Tulbagh on a historic farm set against Witzenberg Mountains and overlooking Tulbagh Valley. There are three self-catering cottages on Schalkenbosch which are comfortably furnished with M Net and cosy fireplaces. The kitchens are fully equipped with small stove, microwave, fridge/freezer and all basic cooking utensils. Each cottage has its own private braai area for which firewood is supplied. A further three double ensuite rooms are available for bed and breakfast guests. Cottage 1. Sleeps four people with two bedrooms, twin beds, Separate lounge with fireplace and kitchen. Separate kitchen and bathroom with shower and bath. Fully equipped with M Net, braai facility with wood supplied Self Catering. Safe parking is available on the farm outside your cottage or room. Should you wish to relax and unwind without the bother of cooking we would be happy to book a table for you at any one of the various local restaurants. The main house was built in Cape Dutch style and completed in 1792 and has been proclaimed a national monument. The gable, as well as the yellow and stinkwood wall-cupboard in the voorkamer, are both featured in South Africa's record of architectural heritage. A spring behind the main house is also recorded as a national monument, although no-one knows precisely why this should be the case. Farming operations have since been considerably expanded. Schalkenbosch Estate is now made up of four farms, Schalkenbosch, Edenhof, Sagtevlei and Delta which cover an area of approximately 2500 hectares. The farming operations now include a racehorse stud, cattle, orchards of apricots and prunes, fields of wheat and barley and the vineyards on Schalkenbosch itself. Quality wine is produced in the modern cellar behind the main homestead and is mostly exported to the German and Swedish markets. A walk through the vineyards provides a magnificent view of the valley. Sunsets are often spectacular and there is frequently snow on the mountains in winter. There is ample opportunity to watch circling birds of prey such as Jackal and Steppe Buzzards and the Black Eagle. A variety of sunbirds and sugar-birds, whose natural habitat is protea and fynbos, are abundant further up the mountain. The farm is home to the endangered geometric tortoise and we ask you to take care when driving to and from the farm as they are often to be seen on the road. The saddle dam up in the mountains behind the vineyards is home to a breeding pair of Blue Crane (the South African national bird) and a family of bat eared foxes have their lair nearby. Leopard, rooikat, baboons and dassies are also to be found in the surrounding area. Price Info:
