The Homestead The core of this house originally built around 1756 forms part of a group of historical buildings closely associated with the nearby Drostdy. The house was reputedly the stable, coach house and saddler's dwelling. Accommodation Much improved under the present ownership, the accommodation skilfully blends old with new. There are three well-appointed guest rooms arranged around the courtyard with a further room in the house. The luxury cottages built in 2000 in Cape Dutch vernacular (with thatched roofs and "Hot Art" fireplaces) have gorgeous garden setting with stunning mountain views. All rooms have quality linen, tea and coffee equipment, haidryers,heaters of fireplaces, fans, some have TV. Facilities There is a salt water pool - ideal for cooling off when it's hot - and a lovely, secluded garden with many fine specimen trees, shrubs and indigenous plants as well as abundant bird life. A favourable climate makes Swellendam a gardener's delight - just about everything flourishes here, especially roses. A spacious Voorkamer is available for guests as the flower-filled courtyard where refreshments may be served in warm weather and a sunny breakfast room with a built-in Norwegian fireplace for occasional chilly mornings. Swellendam and surrounds Only a two-hour scenic drive from Cape Town or George, Swellendam, South-Africa's third oldest town,is an ideal base for visitors to the Overberg,Garden Route and Little Karoo. It has a rich architectural and historical heritage. The "heart of the Overberg" may be small, but it's Big on excellent restaurants. Neraby places of interest include the Drostdy Museum, Bontebok National Park, Marloth Nature Reserve, Cape Agulhas, Robertson Wine Valley and De Hoop Nature Reserve. Outdoor activities run to a nine-hole golf course, horse riding, fishing, boating and water sports, mountain biking trails, walking and hiking in beautiful scenery, bird watching and star gazing.
